Trailer Chassis
For those who do not have a rusty original as a starting point, new chassis will be available in Summer 2008. They will be a bit different to the originals as safety rules
and regulations have changed since the 1950s.
The tipping mechanism will use a hydraulic cylinder to raise the lifting arm, rather than the original chain, which could break - and they did!
Braking regulations have changed too. Our trailers, though designed to be towed by a tractor, are not nowadays classed as agricultural trailers - "They are not used to provide
food for the nation". They will be available in two forms: one with a 750kg maximum weight rating (when on the road) - these do not legally need brakes but will have an original-type handbrake;
and one with hydraulic brakes which can be operated from the tractor hydraulics. These trailers will have two hydraulic hose; one for the brakes and one for tipping.
Obviously the hydraulic brake option will cost more so my advice is to think through what you want to do with the trailer when it is on the road. If you only want to carry a few hay bales on the rod run, then a
750kg maximum rated trailer will be fine for your purpoes and will be less complicated and cheaper.
Note: In terms of actual strength of the trailer, they are all built the same and will all carry the 30Cwt pay load that the originals were designed to carry. It is only the road regulations that complicate things!
